A Tapestry Woven with Fragrance: The Sushyam story
Share
In the heart of India, where the Ganges river gracefully winds its way through the fertile plains of Kannauj, a saga of scent was born. The year was 1863 when two brothers, Sunderlal and Shyamlal Khattri, embarked on a journey that would shape the course of fragrance for generations. Their shared passion for the delicate art of attar-making ignited a spark that would illuminate a path steeped in tradition and excellence.
Operating under the name Sunderlal Shyamlal Khattri, the brothers began their venture with a modest endeavor: selling their exquisite attars in ornate boxes, carried through the bustling streets and vibrant markets of Kannauj. A spirit of enterprise led Shyamlal to expand their reach to the culturally rich city of Varanasi, while Sunderlal tended to the heart of operations in Kannauj, overseeing the meticulous crafting of their aromatic treasures.
As the business flourished, the mantle was passed down through the generations. Sukkhilal Khattri, son of Shyamlal, and subsequently his son Baijnath Khattri, carried forward the legacy, each contributing to the growth and refinement of the family enterprise.
A pivotal moment arrived with the stewardship of Dwarkanath Tandon, Baijnath’s son. A visionary with a keen business acumen, Dwarkanath transformed Sushyam into a formidable force in the fragrance industry. Inspired by the initials of his illustrious predecessors, he rechristened the business "Sushyam," a name that would become synonymous with quality and heritage.
Dwarkanath's relentless pursuit of perfection led him to establish a robust supply chain that extended beyond the borders of Kannauj. He ventured into the lush landscapes of Odisha to cultivate the finest kewda flowers, the heart and soul of many of their exquisite fragrances. Simultaneously, he expanded production to Etah, harnessing the region’s fertile lands to cultivate a wider array of aromatic blooms. His strategic vision solidified Sushyam's position as a pioneer in the fragrance industry.
With a legacy built on tradition and innovation, the reins were handed to Milan Tandon, Dwarkanath's son. A man of exceptional vision, Milan infused Sushyam with a contemporary spirit while steadfastly honoring its ancestral roots. Under his guidance, the brand underwent a transformative journey, emerging as a paragon of luxury and refinement.
Today, Sushyam stands as a testament to the enduring power of family, tradition, and unwavering commitment to excellence. With Milan's sons, Madhav and Amogh, actively involved in the business, the legacy continues to thrive. Each fragrance is a masterpiece, a symphony of nature's artistry and human ingenuity. From the heartland of India to the world stage, Sushyam continues to captivate hearts and senses with the timeless allure of its creations.
Sushyam is more than just a fragrance house; it is a living legacy, a testament to the enduring spirit of India, where tradition and innovation intertwine to create olfactory masterpieces that leave an indelible mark on the world.
